USB Car Kit - Another Option For Listening to Your Music on the Move

I'm sure you're all aware that music can be played just about where ever you want these days, as new versions of MP3 playing hardware are released almost monthly the choices for playing your music are endless. The Market leader (Apple iPod) are released twice a year if not more often and competitor's release they're new versions around the same time, however is this really the best method of listening to music while your on the move?

Granted the main advantage of having an MP3 music player is that you are able to listen to music where ever you want providing your battery is fully charged, after all this the main reason they were designed. However a lot of MP3 devices are not compatible with various other systems, if we wanted to integrate them (iPod being the main exception). So what other ways of listening do we have available?

Well a fairly new trend in car audio is to listen to music via a USB stick, new USB car kits connect in to the CD Changer output on the back of your factory fitted radio. This allows the connection of a USB stick (up to 16GB) to be played through your car speakers, which can be controlled from your steering wheel controls (if you have them).

This method is much cheaper than other integrated devices and USB sticks can be purchased for around £10 and can hold as much music as the new iPod touch; however the only downside is you can't listen to the audio when away from car or computer. But if you want a cheaper way to listen to the music you love on the move this has got to be one of the best options.

The FM Modulator - Used for Its Convenience, not Quality

The FM modulator or FM transmitter is a device used to play your plug-and-play Satellite radio receiver through your vehicle's FM stereo. FM transmitters can also be used to play other digital audio devices like iPods, CD and MD players.

Normally second choice to an audio cassette adaptor because of sound quality, the FM modulator is still a very quick and simple way to get your plug-and-play Satellite radio receiver working in your vehicle.

Although sometimes only used if all else fails, the FM modulator at least provides an option for listeners who not audiophiles, want an easy way to hook up their receiver, or simply do not have a built-in cassette player in their vehicle.

Enough degrading these devices; there are probably thousands of Satellite radio listeners out there who will tell you that they experience good reception using an FM modulator. However, there is no doubt about it, an FM modulator, if used, can and will on occasions degrade the quality of audio output from your plug-and-play Satellite radio receiver.

An FM modulator converts the audio signal from the plug-and-play receiver into an FM signal, which is then transmitted over an unused FM frequency or station selected by the listener. The limitations of the FM frequency band mean this in no way represents what the signal actually sounds like.

There are two types of modulator available; wireless and hardwired.

The wireless modulator is built-in to a power adaptor that plugs into the cigarette lighter socket, the docking station or cradle that houses the plug-and-play receiver, or, more recently, the plug-and-play receiver itself. The receiver's audio output is transmitted over the air to an unused FM frequency.

The wireless modulator is convenient, easy to install and configure, but broadcasts only a very short-range signal prone to fading and with interference; comparatively weaker compared to a hardwired modulator.

The hardwired modulator is placed in between the vehicle's stereo unit and antenna. The modulator connects directly into the stereo's FM antenna socket to provide a better frequency response and a signal with less interference that is less lightly to fade.

It is recommended that a hardwired modulator be installed professionally, as it requires a connection to the antenna socket on the rear of the vehicle's stereo and to the electrical system, all located behind the dashboard.

The amount of interference, static and fading you experience, using either of these devices, depends on where you are geographically located in the US, quality of the in-built tuner or broadcast and the type of modulator installed in your vehicle.

For example, somebody living in a major metropolitan area, using a wireless modulator, will no doubt experience poor reception along with the frequent and often debilitating interference from other radio stations.

With regard to sound quality, the wireless modulator rests at the bottom of the pile with the hardwired version above it. However, depending on circumstances, hardwired modulators can be as good as cassette adaptors if not better.

You also should have a few songs of your own as guitar teaching material. Two-chord songs like Iko-Iko, are great to ignite a kid's interest. Here's a few old folk songs that might also be of some help: Tom Dooley, Puttin' On The Style, He's Got The Whole World In His Hands, Skip To My Lou and My Darling Clementine. When it's time to move onto three chord songs, a web search will yield a whole range of Latin, rock and country songs.

As far as the theoretical side of guitar for kids goes, it is best to give it in small doses. Guitar lessons for kids should never stop being fun. Not necessarily laugh out loud hilarity kind of fun, but at least interesting. So a kid can take plenty of theory as long as it is linked to a song or an idea that interests him. It's the same principle for getting the kid's motor skills moving - keep him interested and don't let him go too fast.

I must say that I have never heard of B&O until I received this unit from my father-in-law as a hand-me-down gift. He got himself a Bose wave radio and has been using that instead. I am actually appalled that he chose the Bose over this (but he is not very mechanically inclined and only cares for simplicity over function).

As for the style, I must say it is almost a work of art. It is beautifully poised over my flat-screen TV on its wall-mount, seeming as an extention of it. The antenna ("aerial"), extends in and out of the unit with the push of a button. The aluminum grill also acts as an antenna, boosting the radio signal.

As for its sound, the best way to put it is "well-balanced." This unit has 2 tweeters, 2 midranges, and one woofer built into it, all with their own power amplifiers. Nearly anything you throw at it will be reproduced in excellent quality and fidelity. And don't let its size fool you - its sound can fill a house!

If you want to hook it up to an external source (TV, DVD, mp3 player, etc.), make sure to order the special plug from B&O. They have a proprietary AUX input.

All I must say is that I have never heard anything to match this piece of equipment. In its styling and its function, it is unparalleled. Listen for yourself at one of the NYC-area stores.

Stop Dimming Your Headlights!

I hear a lot of people complaining about their headlights dimming to the beat of their music after having a car audio system installed. Depending on what size amplifier you have added, you may notice electrical fluctuations throughout the car, including in your car's performance. Here is a simple and cost effective way to stop or significantly reduce this side effect.

The large amounts of power pulled from the amp have to come from somewhere, so it robs your battery, your alternator, and everything else of power that is connected to your battery. This can put a lot of undue strain on the alternator, and can in many cases result in premature failure. You may even notice a decrease in your car's performance too with larger amps. The ignition components all require a steady amount of voltage and amps to perform correctly, and if this flow is disrupted, you can see a decrease in horsepower. This is directly because power that would have been used to fire the spark plugs is being drained by the amp faster than it it being replenished by the alternator.

The easiest solution to this issue is to add a second battery. This essentially doubles the amount of available power the car has. For around $50.00, you can add a second battery and virtually eliminate the dimming headlights. The amp and other added accessories (except the head unit) should be run off of the added battery. It is also a good idea to get a battery isolator for the second battery. This allows the alternator to charge the second battery, but does not allow the components attached to the second battery to put added strain on the primary battery, leaving the primary battery to power the car's other electrical systems. An average battery isolator will run you about $50.00-$100.00, but worth the investment for larger systems.

Don't sacrifice your car's performance for sound. Do it right and get great performance AND great sound.

Here are a few ideas to help you find the fun in any job:

Play music. Turn on your CD player, MP3 player or even the radio. Music has the ability to draw our minds away from the more disheartening aspects of any job.

Make your work a competition. If you are working with someone else, make it a race to see who can get it done soonest. Or who can complete the most of each task.

Just dive in. Most of our feelings of dread disappear once we become immersed in a project. Whatever it was that made us put it off or want to avoid it, just goes away once we get started.

Ask yourself, "What can I find to enjoy about this?" Few jobs are totally devoid of any feelings of satisfaction that comes from just doing it. Psychologically, we need work in order to be happy. Keep score. If your job is to make cold calls all day, keep records of how many calls you make. I listen to a lot of music while walking. In fact, I listen to a lot of classical music CDs that I then review here at amazon.com! But I recently dropped my old portable disc player - I'm a bit of a klutz - and its transport mechanism broke when it hit the sidewalk.

So I took a chance and bought this one, primarily because of several features my old one didn't have: a programmable AM/FM tuner, a wired remote control that connects in tandem with the headphones so that when you wear the discplayer at your waist you can use the remote easily without having to bring the player itself up to eye level, and because it includes a soft carrying case that has a l o o o o n g belt that fits around my, er, ample waist.

And I have to say, it works like a dream. The controls are easy to negotiate, the radio and the CD player work seamlessly and the headphones are adequate. About the headphones - they're the 'bud' type that fit into your ears and they're pretty comfortable. I will probably switch to over-the-ear headphones for noise-reduction (I tend to walk where there's a fair amount of traffic noise) but it probably really isn't necessary. One more thing, the 48-second delay anti-skip mechanism makes it possible to jog vigorously without annoying drop-outs when you're listening to a CD.

A nice little disc player, in my estimation.

It may not have a pre amp, but if you just want to rock out, it pushes 50 watts on 4 channels - so it does have some giddyup of its own.
I have this headunit, a pair of XPLOD XS-GT6935A 6x9s in back and XPLOD XS-W3521 3.5" up front.
Got to tell you don't see why I would need an amp.
Is plenty loud and clean.
Has the auxilliary input but also plays mp3s on disks as well, so almost no need for it unless you are Die Hard IPOD person.
Loading MP3s on a CD was always easier and this will read RWs, as well.

Great deal at the price, but does have one tiny annoyance. When you turn the car off the unit will beep three times unless you remove the faceplate.
Saw nothing in the instructions on how to turn this off.
As I rarely remove the plate, I just deal with it.

I was little concerned about what we might get, since we bought this boom box without first seeing it in a store. We are happily surprised, and our 3 year old daughter simply loves it.

Pros:
1. It's easy to use: our daughter can easily load CDs, play/change tracks; the buttons are large and easy to press
2. It seems pretty durable, even if it's mostly plastic
3. Sound quality is good for the price.

Cons:
1. Some of the controls (volume, on/off) seem a bit oddly placed

Other thoughts:
--It has a cassette player?? Who still has cassettes?

I think it's a winner for the price, especially given the amount of cheapo
items flooding the market these days. I'd recommend this to a friend.

People really should read the description of the product before buying it and then complaining about it in a review.

This is a great CD player. I've had it for several weeks now and have never had an issue with it at all. CDs play fine and the radio (AM & FM) come in crystal clear. I would definitely recommend this CD player to someone looking for a no-frills player that works extremely well for the price. Compact, light-weight and EXTREMELY easy to use. My six-year-old daughter uses it with no problem at all. HIGHLY recommended.

FM radio reception is poorer than my boom box with rabbit ears.
The cabinet itself is very nice.
Sound is very good, and creating a CD with a single track is easy. I'm not good at putting the track breaks in the right place.
The free Audacity software is good also, and the instructions Crosley provides are good. It's a slow and painful learning curve. I've gotten to the point where the Audacity sound is great, but haven't been able to write it to a CD.
I would definitely recommend a Crosley 5 in 1 turnable. If I can figure out how to write the edited audio to a CD, it will be perfect with the USB.
